Johnson City is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Johnson City was John Sevier, who traded goods with the Cherokee Indians in 1796. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson decided to move the seat of government from Nashville to Jacksonville due to an overpopulation and lack of land in that city. The new capital was established on February 12, 1813 by order of President James K. Polk as Johnson City after Lieutenant Colonel John Bledsoe Johnson donated land for the purpose. On December 6, 1830, Johnson City became one of thirty-six counties in Tennessee which were organized into a state under supervision of Governor Blount (the other thirty-six were Athens County and Campbell County). The first settlers arrived in what is now Johnson City on April 12, 1831 when General Zachariah Chandler moved his family from Saluda along the Cumberland River from Tellico Plains (now Tellico Hills) northward into present day Sevier County through what are now Jenningsville (then Scooba), Prestonsburg (now Greeneville), and Franklin before reaching their destination at Cynthiana Springs near today's downtown area. By 1840 there were 1 or 2 hundred people residing within all six settlements mentioned above; however progress made little headway until about 1850 when transportation improved significantly and accessibility to markets increased eastward through Uniontown & Hendersonville.. Settlers soon built Log Cabin style homes on cleared lots generally between seven and twelve acres each providing plenty of room for agriculture as well as commerce center including saw mills etc., churches/synagogues etc.; schools; taverns while some also engaged in mining operations such as copper smelting etc., later becoming known as "mining towns".
