The Johnson City, Tennessee National Guard was first organized in 1892. The Guard was originally called the Volunteer Infantry Regiment and served in the Spanish-American War. In 1916, the Guardsmen were redesignated as the Tennessee National Guard and saw service in World War I. After World War I, the Guardsmen were reorganized into two battalions and served as part of the American Expeditionary Force during World War II. The Guardsmen were again redesignated as the Tennessee National Guard in 1949 and serve today as part of the United States Army Reserve. The Johnson City, TN National Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to 1892 when it was first organized under orders from General John Caney. At that time, the Volunteers were called “the Rifle Brigade of Tennessee” because they had been recruited from throughout central and eastern Tennessee. From 1902 to 1912, unit members served with distinction in various campaigns including Santa Fe (1902), Shiloh (1905), Ypres (1915), Anzio (1945) and Normandy ( 1944). In 1916, following World War I's conclusion, both battalions of the Guardsmen were combined into one regiment under new command structure known as “the Volunteer Infantry Regiment No 3” which remained active until 1947 when it was decommissioned due to budget cuts within the military bureaucracy. In 1949, following passage of legislation authorizing national guard troops to participate in peacekeeping operations throughout western Europe, both battalions of “the Volunteer Infantry Regiment No 3” rejoined forces with other units within Department of Defense for deployment to England where they participated in Operation Overlord – an amphibious assault on Nazi Germany's mainland stronghold at Dunkirk. Upon return home from their overseas duty – still featuring prominently onTennessee state flags – these veterans formed what is now known as Company A #5/8ths Texas Rangers / Johnson City Ranger Battalion; later incarnation transferred to local reserve organization effective 15Aug1959 until disbanded 1Sep1972 by orderof Gov't effective 1 Sep1972 CSGORD Journal #10774 After returning home from their war experience; Company A #5/8ths Texas Rangers / Johnson City Ranger Battalion began preparations for reconstruction phase which included recruitment drive among citizens through mail premiums & door-to-door solicitation efforts targeting soldiers families stationed abroad while reservists got training at local camps; finally activated 15Aug1959 activation order became final order dated 2 Sep1972 effective date 1 Sep 1972 CSGORD Journal #10774 In 1948 there was a reorganization within Department of Defense resulting in establishment of three Military Districts: Southwest Pacific Area commanded by Major General Edward J Smith headquartered at Honolulu Hawaii; European Command composed of Headquarters US Army Forces Europe located at Frankfurt Germany with Major General Lewis H Stroud commanding Theater Commander Allied Forces Germany); South Atlantic Command consisting only HQ USArmy Forces South Atlantic located at Tampa Floridaheadquartered at Fort Pierce Florida with Brigadier General Leslie R Higgins commanding Commander Allied Forces Africa) which eventually became merged into Continental Security Command under command generalfinanced MajGen William P McManus 9Feb49 who assumed control 4Mar50 . Johnson City is a small city in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Johnson City was founded in 1859 by General Andrew Johnson and his family as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The community developed into a small town after Johnson's election as president in 1868 and his re-election in 1872. In 1876, Johnson City became an incorporated village under the name of Clarksville. After Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861, Clarksville became one of several Confederate military posts along the Eastern Kentucky Valley Railroad. The town prospered during Reconstruction but declined after Reconstruction ended in 1865. During World War II, Johnson City served as an airbase for American forces engaged in Allied operations against Nazi Germany; it also housed prisoners of war concentration camps until 1945. Johnson City experienced significant growth following its incorporation into Knox County as a county seat in 1907; however, most progress came during the 1960s when development around the airport began to take off and today's downtown is one of America's most vibrant locales for shopping and dining experiences
