Grant that year; he chose Corinth because it had been destroyed by Union forces during the Battle of Chickamauga two years earlier and its destruction added to existing Confederate morale within the state of Alabama.[2] After Bragg's defeat at Chattanooga on September 18,[3] he retreated back into Tennessee and did not return until after General Robert Ewell's failed attempt to take command of Confederate Forces operating north of Memphis three days later on October 14th (Ewell's raid). This document gives us an idea about how food rationing must have been during those times; most likely people only could buy what they needed so there wasn't any waste or leftovers which goes bad over time like today's produce does! Accordingly we can assume that since 1862 or before there has always been some type of grocery store here in Johnson City even if it isn't currently open!
