Knoxville is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 153,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Tennessee after Nashville and it is also the largest city east of Memphis. Knoxville is the principal city of the Knox County, Tennessee metropolitan area, which had a population of 2 million as of 2015. The first European to visit what is now Knoxville was Major John Sevier on July 16, 1795 while exploring the lower Ohio Valley region for British forces during the Northwest India Company's War for Independence from Great Britain. He named his find "Knoxville" after General James Knox who was then commanding British forces in that part of North America. The settlement grew rapidly with many new people coming from England and Wales to work in mills and mines near downtown Knoxville until World War II when large parts of downtown were destroyed by bombing raids from the USAAF in order to create an open-air concentric bomb shelter known as "the Black Hole". In 1957, Elvis Presley recorded one song about life in Chattanooga before he moved to Memphis. In 1819, John Senter founded what became known as "Henderson's store", located on East Broad Street between Second and Third Streets (now called Main Street), which traded goods such as woolen fabric and hardware to farmers along Interstate 65 outside of Nashville. Henderson's store played an important role in helping start what would become known as American trade with China during this time period: beginning with purchases made at Henderson's store by Ulysses S. Grant during his efforts to negotiate peace terms following Shenandoah Valley Campaign (1871). In 1815, Knoxville was founded as a trading post on the Tennessee River by surveyors John Sevier and James Robertson. The town grew around the military fort built in 1819 by Lieutenant Colonel James K. Polk to protect traders traveling the river. In 1835, Knoxville became a county seat of Knox County and remained so until 1925. The first school in Knoxville was established in 1827 and operated by Congregationalists. A Baptist church was added to the community in 1830. The first high school, now known as Eastern Kentucky University, opened its doors in 1837. The first hospital for women was set up in 1840 and still stands today as part of Mercy Hospital System. Knoxville's growth continued during the Civil War with construction of new homes, businesses, and churches including Fort Donelson (1861), Fort Pillow (1865), Hickory Hill (1871), Confederate Depot at English Bridge (1872), Battle Ground Hill (1875), West Pointe Campground (1876), East Pointe Campground (1877) and Chattanooga National Military Park/Fort Ross National Historic Site(1974). After the war, Knoxville experienced a period of rapid growth with factories opening up along Interstate 40 which contributed to an increase in population from less than 8,000 to more than 30,000 by 1920. During this time also came major changes with the institute of Prohibition leading to economic decline which finally ended with World War II when Tennessee joined America's victorious allies. Afterwards saw an era of reconstruction which included large-scale job creation and modest increases in population until both general social unrest and decade-long economic stagnation began to characterize postwarTennessee society
