Lawrenceburg is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Lawrence and his wife Sarah on May 12, 1827. It had a total population of 226 in 1870 when it was included in the new Hardin Circuit Court district. In 1908, the name change to Lawrenceburg after General Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Lawerence traveled through the area on their way to visit General James K. Polk during the campaign for president that year. In 1924, Lawrenceburg became an incorporated municipality with its own mayor and City Council; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became one of thirty-six townships within Hardin County under guidance of a Municipal Services Commission established by state legislation (Plymouth Township v. State). According to the 2000 census, there are 3,707 people living in Lawrenceburg; 1% are Native American Indian or Alaska Native residents and 0% are black or African American residents

Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Lawrenceburg is named after General George Armstrong Custer and his unit, the 4th Cavalry Regiment. The town was founded in 1875 by John Wesley Hardin and his family. Lawrenceburg was originally a farming community with some manufacturing capabilities such as knitting needles and shoes. The first store in town opened in 1876. In 1902, the first school was built. By 1905, there were six stores and sixty-six residents in Lawrenceburg. In 1907, the first telephone line was established in Lawrenceburg; it served only local residents until 1917 when a phone line went to Knoxville proper. In 1918, the post office became an electric Cooperative; it continued to be operated by that organization until 1951. In 1952, Lawrenceburg voted to become an independent city; it did so on July 1st of that year under new municipal government regulations passed by the state legislature that had been adopted earlier that year as part of amendments to theTennessee Constitution which granted municipalities wide latitude in matters of local control which included elections for Mayor and City Councilmembers within two years after passage of those regulations despite opposition from many county officials who saw this as another threat to their authority over local affairs given their large number of employees who resided within unincorporated areasirted with by municipalities while subject to county jurisdiction on various issues including zoning laws and road construction planning (i.e., street paving).
