Lebanon, Tennessee is an agricultural community located in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Tennessee. The original settlers were Quakers who arrived in 1814. The community was formed when a group of them bought land near what is now Lebanon,Tennessee, and built a log cabin. The first white settler in Lebanon was James Gentry, who came to the area in 1827. In 1840, John Fenton established a small cotton plantation south of town. By 1870, there were only six families living in Lebanon proper and seventy-five people employed on farms and plantations. However, during the late 1800s growth began to occur as new businesses developed and Lebanese residents started buying property outside of town for developments such as churches, schools and shopping stores. Lebanon, Tennessee is a small town in Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro metropolitan area. The community began as a post office in 1836 and was named for Limassol, Cyprus. In 1868 it became an independent municipality and was renamed Lebanon after the capital of Lebanon in 1923. The population grew rapidly during the 20th century due to agricultural production and industrialization; however, this growth stopped during the 1970s because of economic problems in Lebanon and other distressed communities throughout America. Since then, policy changes by local governments have helped revive Lebanese culture and businesses while preserving cultural heritage such as traditional music and dance. Lebanon experienced significant destruction during World War II when Japanese forces bombed the town on April 9–10 1944. More than 100 homes were destroyed with many more injured or killed; however, the community rebuilt quickly with help from American troops stationed here. From 1945 until 1975 Beirut served as the capital of Iraq under Saddam Hussein's repressive dictatorship which caused great damage to its infrastructure including churches and schools; though Iraqi forces eventually withdrew from Iraq in 2003 following his ouster, reconstruction continues today with support from donations from individuals and foundations across America The community has seen increasing gentrification over recent years as larger businesses move into nearby neighborhoods but recent trends suggest that Lebanese culture still persists within its borders despite overall gentrification activity
Lebanon, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by General James Robertson. The town was named for the Mount Lebanon Mountains in northcentral Pennsylvania. The first store in the town was built on Main Street and operated by Aaron Smith. In 1827, a sawmill was built along river banks near what is now Park Avenue. The town had five stores by 1830 and twenty-nine residents. A post office was established in 1831 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1840, the first school building was erected in Lebanon and served as the municipal center for the community until it burned down in 1851. A new school building was erected in 1861 and served as the primary local educational institution until it also burned down in 1951. In 1865, a railroad line arrived to Lebanon with tracks running east-west through the community from Knoxville to Chattanooga. The town grew rapidly with numerous businesses opening up including a cotton gin, grocery store, printing press, bank and several churches. By 1870, there were over 200 residents living within limits of Lebanon proper while also extending into surrounding townships such as Swain County to the south and Blacksburg County to the northwest. By 1880, some 1,500 people lived within limits of Lebanon proper while also extending into nearby townships including Swain County to the south and Blacksburg County to the northwest In 1896, two bridges were constructed across Holston Creek which connected Lebanese with Blackburn Township to the southeast while connecting Blackburn Township with Williamson County to the southwest In 1954, Interstate 75 crossed Holston Creek near Lebanese causing a large population increase within limits of that community as well as adjoining Townsend Township no
