What started as a small town in the heart of the Smoky Mountains has grown into one of the most vibrant coffee scenes in the United States. Lewisburg, Tennessee is home to around 100 coffee farmers and roasters who produce over 1,000 different types of coffee each year. The region's rich history with brewing and roasting began when pioneer Alexander Graham Bell founded a mill here in 1876. In 1881, he opened Oneida Coffee Company, which became one of America's leading coffee companies. Today, Oneida Coffee continues to be headquartered in Lewisburg and sells its beans all across the country. One of the most significant events in Lewisburg's coffee history was when it became an official city in 1975. At that time, it was recognized as one of America's most flourishing coffee communities due to its supportive community atmosphere and highly-rated cafes. Today, there are over 10 cafes located throughout downtown Lewisburg – including two new additions this year – making it one of the most comprehensive coffee scenes in America. Lewisburg is a small town located in Morgan County, Tennessee. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. Lewisburg was founded in 1802 as an agricultural settlement and named for General David Wilkinson. It became a town in 1875 and has since been designated a national historic district. The first European settlers to Lewisburg were Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived from Ulster in the early 1800s. They began farming land in what is now part of Lewisburg and built homes using logs they brought overland from Ireland. In 1802, General David Wilkinson, the commander of the Tennessee militia during the War of 1812, came to live in what is now Lewisburg and eventually became its first mayor. The community grew rapidly due to its location near strategic points on the road between Nashville and Knoxville. By 1830, much of present-day Lewisburg had been built including churches, schools, stores, and a post office. During Reconstruction following the Civil Rights Movement (1865–1870),Lewisburg experienced some significant political changes which have left their mark on today's culture and economy. In 1870, white Democrats regained control of local government after losing power to African Americans during Reconstruction. As white Republicans emerged as dominant forces within society during this time period, they began efforts to promote black economic development in downtown Lewisburg through public works projects such as roads and bridges that remain important elements of today's economy. This policy led to conflict between whites and blacks which continued into the 21st century until finally culminating with passage of local non-discrimination ordinances in 2001."
