This purchase marked the beginning of hard work on Henderson's plantation by his slaves who were paid according to how much produce they grew on their fields. By 1830, over twenty thousand acres had been worked on by slave labor alone! After years of planning and construction by Henderson’s team, Manchester’s first courthouse was dedicated in 1837. It served as an important link between the city and its farmers and traders who traveled through Hardin County on their way to sell goods or trade goods with other states or countries. This courthouse became known as “the Capitol” because it housed many important government documents such as court decisions, warrants and treaties! Manchester also played an important role during the Civil War because its citizens supplied food for Confederate troops during campaigns across central Tennessee including battles at Murfreesboro (1863), Knoxville (1864) and Chickamauga (1865). In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell surrounded John Crayton's home northeast of town after Crayton surrendered at Appomattox Court Housegrounds. Aftermath revealed that more than seventy people died inside Mr. Crayton's house frombleeding out from injuries sustained while being held hostage! For this valiant effort against overwhelming odds – he received both military honors posthumously awarded by President Ulysses S Grant –Manchester Mayor James Hogg presented him with a grotesque carved marble bust along with a plaque that reads: "In memory of John Crayton Captured Aliveby Rebels Feb 1862."
