Manchester, Tennessee is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Manchester was founded in 1814 by General James Seddon and his brother-in-law John Sevier. It became a part of the Union in 1861. In 1925, it was chartered as a city. Manchester's history can be traced back to when General James Seddon decided to settle in what is now Hardin County after being given the choice of two counties in Kentucky: one would have included Chattanooga and the other would have included Johnson City. In 1814 General James Seddon and his brother-in-law John Sevier founded Manchester on the banks of the Muscle Shoals River near what is now Knoxville. On July 4th, 1830, Manchester was burned by Confederate forces during their siege of Knoxville. The fire destroyed much of downtown but also helped start cotton production which began arriving from nearby fields soon afterwards. Manchester quickly grew into an important center for trade and commerce with its location on the river providing easy access to goods from both east and west along with access to transportation routes through surrounding counties including Sequatchie Valley and Athens County. By 1861, Manchester had become a thriving community with over 2,000 residents contributing to its economy which helped contribute to its annexation into Knoxville proper in 1865 following a vote by the city council. In 1925 Manchester became part of Knoxville when it consolidated with other towns within Hardin County following approval by voters there as well as via referendum held that same year. Today,Manchester remains an important commercial center providing jobs for locals as well as serving as home to many government agencies such as Knoxville’s school system and firefighters’ department located adjacent to one another on North Main Street just off Highway 71A (the old route followed by truckloads of passengers traveling between Chattanooga andKnoxville). Additionally numerous businesses dot downtown giving visitors plenty of opportunities for shopping while still remaining close enough so that you can enjoy excellent views from various rooftops or parks if desired; something that cannot be found very often these days outside larger urban areas dominated by malls/highways/restaurants/.
