In 1903, Joe Eason founded Joplin Manufacturing Company with his brother-in-law George Ball and began making jukeboxes and other equipment for amusement arcades throughout East Tennessee. At that time, most amusements took place outdoors or inside small businesses like piano bars or pool halls where workers could drink while playing games such as checkers or poker. By 1910, Joplin had started manufacturing radios and TVs as well as guitars and other electronics products at its plant on Third Street in downtown Maryville.
