The town grew rapidly due to its location near muddy riverside roads and its availability of farmland for farming. By 1870, Maryville had a population of approximately 150 people and had begun to build homes around its businesses. By 1901, Maryville had become a thriving community with a population of over 300 people. It became an incorporated city in 1911 and has been continuously governed by its City Council ever since. In 1978, the city increased its budget by $8 million dollars through voter approval referendum and established itself as one of Tennessee's most economically vibrant cities with strong job growth opportunities for both residents and visitors alike!
