The Millington Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized at Millington, Tennessee on December 12, 1861, and mustered into service on January 3, 1862. The regiment fought in the Battle of Antietam ( September 14-18), in the Battle of Fredericksburg ( October 13-15), and in the Battle of Chancellorsville ( April 15-17). It surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The regiment lost a total of 131 men killed or mortally wounded during its service.
Millington is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,846 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the Cumberland River near the Kentucky state line. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Millington has a post office with ZIP code 65259. The name of the community comes from John Millington, who founded it in 1820. The first settler in Millington was Isaac Goode and his family. They built a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street in 1824 or 1825. In 1830, Colonel John Aiken donated land to form what would become Millington Township which included present-day MillingTON and parts of East Knoxville and West Knoxville (now Roanoke). In 1835, Hillandale Baptist Church was organized and services were held at the Log Cabin for about ten years until new facilities were built on what are now Elmwood Drive and Maple Street. Reverend James Duplett officiated at first services before moving to First Baptist Church later that year where he served until his death in 1865.. Meanwhile, Methodist services were being provided by Mrs.(Sarah) Hutton at her home on Cherry Lane until she too moved out of state for medical reasons in 1839; however her husband continued to conduct services there until his death in 1870.. Finally, Reverend Daniel Poe officiated from 1840 to 1850 before moving to First Presbyterian Church which stands today across Elmwood Drive from Hillandale Baptist Church.. On October 1st, 1851 when Tennessee became a state under the US Constitution following its Compromise of 1850 amendment adding Missouri territory into the Union as well as other changes approved by Congress (includingKnox County joining),Millington voted 2–1 against incorporation intoKnox County because they felt their location would be lost within larger cities such as Memphis or Nashville should South Carolina secede from US soil while still maintaining tie with those stateside values/ customs/etc...thus setting an early precedent for how towns may choose not to become counties if they feel special interests will have undue sway over government policy/operation etc...the vote effectively signified that most inhabitants here wanted no affiliation whatsoever with either county government other than providing necessary local goods/services etc...thus giving rise to one of Knox County's oldest traditions: "No Men Better Know Why We Don't Join You"
