The history of the navy in Addison, Texas goes back to 1865 when the first U.S. Navy ship, USS Constitution, arrived in that city for a year and a half of training. After spending time moored at the Reynoldson Dockyard, Constitution sailed for Norfolk on July 4th, 1865. The day after her arrival she took part in the Battle of Hampton Roads which resulted in the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and ended the civil war in Virginia. Constitution was decommissioned on December 1st 1865 and sold to various owners before being scrapped in 1922. In 1902 USS Enterprise (CV-6) anchored at Addison Municipal Pier while repairs were being made toUGHQUEENSBURG (CVE-8). On November 15th Enterprise left port for her next deployment during World War I but returned to port on December 27th due to severe weather conditions off Newfoundland. Enterprise departed again on January 3rd 1918 for duty off Norway as flagship of Destroyer Squadron 5 with Task Group 16 destroyers and also served as flagship for Cruiser Division 7 during operations against German submarines off Norway’s coast from May through September 1918. Addison is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 26,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County and home to the Addison Independent School District. The first settlers in what is now Addison were two brothers, John and James Addison, who arrived in 1836 from Illinois. They founded a town on what is now State Line Road east of present-day downtown Addison. In 1839 they organized a school district which became one of the largest in Texas. The following year they built an academy which still stands today as one of the most popular educational institutions in the area. In 1860 citizens of neighboring Wichita voted to secede from Kansas and form their own state called Texas; however, this idea was not accepted by Texans located in Wichita so it never happened. On July 8, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell led Confederate forces into Wichita during the Battle for Topeka against Union forces commanded by George Buell. A force led by Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest destroyed most of Wichita's railway system before withdrawing back to Corinth Junction near Dallas while Ewell burned down many buildings including the Wichita Academy building before escaping southwestward across country towards Edinburg (now Austin). This event is known as Topeka's Burning and has been cited as one of America's first major civil rights incidents In 1865 Addison voters approved incorporation into Midland County with its current name reflecting its history: "Addison /Midland County". The city continued growth throughout Reconstruction with limited attention paid to public education until World War II when enrollment at local schools shot up due to soldiers returning home from combatousing abroad In 1951 residents re-elected Mayor John Cavanaugh through a referendum over City Council candidates but he resigned less than two months later after being convicted on charges related to corruption within his administration After his resignation addison experienced rapid growth attributed mainly to white flight from various parts of Texas following Denton's decision earlier that year not to annex Addisons annexation request .
