In 1836, the Texas Revolution began and ended with the Battle of Alamo. The battle was fought between Texans and Mexican forces in San Antonio, Texas. The Texan victory at Alamo resulted in the death of over 50 Mexicans and five Americans. This event is celebrated annually by Mexican-Americans as the Alamo Day holiday. The Marine Corps was founded on December 8, 1861, during the American Civil War. The Marine Corps has always been a part of America’s military culture, dating back to its inception in 1846 when Marines were sent to protect Ulysses S. Grant’s inauguration as president of the United States. Through its history, Marines have played an important role in many wars and conflicts around the world including Operation Desert Storm (1991), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-present), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2007), Afghanistan (2011-12) and Libya (2012). During World War II, Marines served aboard warships such as aircraft carriers USS Lexington and USS Yorktown, battleships USS Constitution and USS New Orleans, submarines USS Scorpionfish and PCL-1701 Purvis netsweepers, Landing Craft Infantry(LCI) LST 332(LHD) — all while serving under various commandoes from Company D 1st Battalion 3rd Regiment “Marine Light Infantry” who fought ashore against Japanese forces at Leyte Gulf on October 20 1944; Battle of Iwo Jima on September 30 1945; Okinawa Gunto on April 9 1946; Tinian Island Liberation Offensive on February 15 1948; Inchon Peninsula Campaign against Japan effective November 25 1951 – January 5 1952 inclusive; Korean War Defense Phase July 25 UN Armistice Agreement ending June 27 1955 inclusive). The Alamo, also known as the Alamo Mission and San Antonio Missions, was a Franciscan Revival church in the city of San Antonio, Texas. It was built from 1836 to 1839, and became one of the most famous landmarks in the United States. The mission was located on an adjacent rancho that belonged to Mexican José de Oviedo. On July 6, 1836, Texans under General Sam Houston captured the mission after a five-day siege. Houston's army then burned down the original building and replaced it with a more modern structure. The mission is considered a national landmark because of its importance in American history.
The Alamo was a strategic location for warfare in the Texas Revolution. On July 26, 1836, Mexican general José Joaquín Mora attacked and captured the fortifications at the Alamo while its defenders were away to dinner.
