Tactical coffee has a long and varied history in Alamo, Texas. The first known reference to coffee being brewed as a form of combat support was in 1846 when Capt. John Brougham mentioned the use of beans for “a poultice to dress the wounds of our cavalry” during the Mexican-American War. Coffee production began sporadically in Alamo until 1861, when it became an official military garrison town. In 1862, Lt. Colonel James Hance established blacksmith shops within the garrison and started brewing coffee for soldiers and officers on duty. Coffee production continued throughout the American Civil War, with installations such as Fort Sam Houston becoming operational with beans from local roasters. By 1865, coffee had become an integral part of Army strategy and operations in Texas and all across Mexico. During Reconstruction following the war, many small businesses sprang up around military bases offering various services such as printing newspapers or providing transportation to troops stationed abroad. In 1919, Alamo Coffee Company was founded by Captains John Brougham Jr., Frank McClendon and George Hanks with help from Donato Giannone of Italian descent who had opened his own espresso shop in San Antonio two years earlier. With its own rich flavor profile, Alamo Coffee quickly became one of America’s most popular brands for coffee products. By 1971, Alamo Coffee had reached more than 25 outlets nationwide including locations at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall – now Arlington National Cemetery – in Virginia Beach VA USA . Over time, other branches were opened outside of Texas such as Jacksonville FL (1973), Key West FL (1974), Austin TX (1978), Memphis TN (1979) and Arlington VA (1981). In 1990, Alamo Coffee merged with Maxwell House Corporation making it one of the largest Starbucks franchises worldwide.. John Bison repulsed an attack by Lopez de Santa Anna and his forces. A day later, Mexican general José Joaquín Herrera arrived at the fortification with reinforcements and attempted to assault Bison and his men but was stopped by a single shot from Bison's rifleman, James Bowie. Afteriano Gomez led a small party of Mexicans against members of the Ulysses S Grant's cavalry detachment near the fort on July 5th,18 36 after they had failed to deceive British General David Amherst into thinking that two separate engagements were taking place nearby; this caused Amherst to order an artillery bombardment of the fortifications which destroyed most of its cannons (the only remaining cannon being used during American siege). Herrera was killed during this engagement while trying to escape; however he was not buried at Fort Sam Houston because he had been ordered to go north instead by President Manuel Micheltorena who saw fit due to concerns about possible rebellion among Texans following Herrera's death In 1865 both Texas and Mexico lost their independence from America which createda potential for war between both countries if one country ever regained independence On February 16, 1936 Ernest Hemingway wrote an article for Life magazine entitled "A Day at the Alamo" in which he described how it felt as a young man living just outside of Austin who would regularly visit the fortification where people would often sell him cigarettes or food because they knew he was interested in historical items In 1978 three years after its restoration Emperor Carlos V died without leaving any heirs so Mexico became again independent with no legal power over Texas Alamodome Stadium is currently being built adjacent to it
