Alice, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. It was founded in 1867 by the merger of two smaller towns. Alice has a population of about 3,000 people and is home to the Alice Independent School District. The city is named after Alice Ellington who was born in nearby Palestine, Texas in 1868. The first store in Alice opened its doors on Main Street in 1867. The store was run by John and Sarah Goode who were also the founders of Hudspeth County. Some of the earliest businesses in Alice included a bakery and a clothier. In 1870, A&P grocery store opened its doors and became one of the most popular stores in town. In 1922, Coca-Cola began selling soft drinks here and continues to do so to this day! In 1966, Alice experienced its first tornado when an EF3 tornado struck the area killing four people and injuring more than 40 individuals! The damage done to the town during that storm was extensive and it took many years for it to fully recover from that event. Today, Alice is still considered one of the safest cities in Texas when it comes to Tornadoes!
