Allen, Texas is a small town in the US state of Texas. The population was 5,277 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Allen is located about 25 miles (40 km) north of downtown Dallas and about 20 miles (30 km) south of Arlington. The community started as a small farming village on the edge of what is now Fort Worth National Cemetery. When development began in the early 1900s, farmers turned to oil drilling for money to pay their mortgages and buy food for their families. They also built schools and churches – both Methodist and Baptist – that remain in use today. In 1908, when new federal law mandated evacuation during World War I, much of Fort Worth's business district emptied out into Allen because it was too close to military installations. That same year, an oil man named Milton Bradley founded Bradley Oil Company in Allen with $5 worth of crude oil he had unearthed from a well on his farm near Midtown Fort Worth. The company soon became one of America’s leading producers of light oils, hydraulic fracturing fluids and asphalt until it merged with ConocoPhillips in 2009.
