Allen, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. It was founded in 1879 by two brothers and their families as a post office on the banks of the Elkhorn River. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Allen is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and lies within ZIP code 75206. Allen is home to Baylor University, one of America's largest universities and one of its most prominent research institutions. The early settlers in Allen were farmers who grew corn, wheat, cattle, and hogs; there are still some older homes that date back to that time. In 1881, the brothers named their town after New York City Mayor James K. Polk (1841-1912). Allen, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Allen was Levi Coffin in 1836. In 1879, James Hogg and his family moved from Missouri to live in what is now Allen. They named their new settlement Hogg's Colony after James Hogg, an early settler in Hudspeth County.
