Since the early days of the United States Army, there has been a strong connection between Alton and the military. Alton was founded in 1836 as a small town on the Texas border, just outside of Austin. The town grew quickly and soon became an important center for military activity in the region. The first American troops arrived in Alton in 1846, during the Mexican-American War. In 1849, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked Texan forces at San Jacinto, leading to one of the bloodiest battles in American history. The fight ended with Santa Anna's defeat and his capture by American forces. In response to this victory, President James K. Polk ordered Congress to pass a bill authorizing establishment of a U.S.-Mexico War Department within the newly created Army Department. In 1850, General Sam Houston surrendered control of Texas to Mexican authorities following their successful Invasion of Mexico City; this battle is considered one of America's most decisive defeats in warfare. With Texas under Mexican occupation, Alton become an important garrison town for U.S.-Mexican troops stationed along both sides of the Rio Grande River. This situation changed when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802 on February 15th, 1942 establishing Operation Overlord –the invasion and liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany and its allies – as part Southeastern England's primary focus during World War II A large number of soldiers from Alton fought throughout World War II including serving with distinction in campaigns such as Normandy (1944), Italy (1945), The Philippines ( 1945), Korea (1950-1953) and Southeast England during Operation Market Garden (September 1944).

The Alton Rifle Museum and Gunnery School was founded in 1912. It is the oldest rifle school in Texas. The school is located on State Highway 183, east of Alton. It was accredited by the National Rifle Association in 1977.

Alton is a small town in eastern Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Alton was founded by settlers from Ohio in 1881. In 1901, the town became part of the new county of Travis and was named for General John A. Alton who had fought with Mexico in 1846. In 1915, Alton Post office closed after serving only one term due to population growth and annexations by other towns in Travis County; however, Alton retaining its name until it too ceased to exist as a municipality on June 30, 1984 when it amalgamated with Round Rock to form the current Austin metropolitan area.[1] Today's downtown core is an historicdistrict that contains numerous buildings dating back to before 1900 including: the Methodist Church (1892), courthouse (1895), first school building (1896), cotton gin and mill (1901), Union Pacific Railroad depot(1911), post office (1915) and fire hall/ jail (1968). The district also includes several blocks of undeveloped land along Lamar Boulevard between 7th Street Southwest and 8th Street Southwest which has been designated as a "historic district".
In 1845, Alton was founded by Hiram Maverick and his wife Margaret. The town was named for the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. In 1868, Alton became a city and in 1893, it was annexed by Austin.
