Alton, Texas is a small town located in the hills of West Texas. It was founded in 1881 by Jasper C. Cooke and his family. The village grew quickly, becoming an important stop on theStagecoach line along the Comanche Trail. By 1907, Alton had a population of over 100 residents and a jail. The first policeman to be stationed in Alton was Major Dan Kelly who arrived in 1907. He served until 1911 when he was replaced by Captain Rufus Ewing. In 1912, Captains John Pope and James Fenton took over as captains of the police department. From 1913-1917, Captain George Hill led the department while Lieutenant John Waddell served as assistant captain. Throughout its history, Alton has been home to many different types of law enforcement officers who have helped protect citizens from crime and disorder. Officers who have served in Alton include: First Sergeant Amos Eaton (1889-1920), Second Sergeant Harry Sheppard (1920-1927), Third Sergeant Leroy Herrington (1927-1945), Fourth Sergeant Cecil Payne (1945-1950), Fifth Sergeant Leo Bowers (1950-1959) and Sixth Sergeant Everett Ault (1959-1964).

The Alton Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 11,085. Alton was founded by Englishman James Caldwell in 1836 as an open-air trading post on the upper Trinity River. In 1840, Caldwell and his family moved to what would become Alton and began to cultivate maize and other crops for local markets. In 1851, George Washington Hardin bought fields near Alton from John Denton for $1 million. Hardin built a large cotton gin and mill there in 1852; these industries remain important today. In 1870, when the railroad arrived in Dallas County, Alton became one of its first towns. The town's first store was opened by Wm Henson in 1871; it continued to be operated until 1951. A school was started in 1870 but closed due to financial problems; it reopened in 1912 under new leadership and remains operational today. A church was built in 1901 but elements of it were destroyed during World War II; it reopened as a Baptist church under new leadership in 1955 and remains active today. A post office was established at Alton on December 12, 1860, but no mail ever reached the community because of difficulties obtaining horses to carry supplies upriver from Fort Worth overland via the Trinity River crossing (the only means then available for getting goods into or out of Dallas). On November 25, 1861', residents voted not to annexation byDallas because they believed that their own town would have more benefits than would come with being withinDallas City Limits

However, even though Alton experienced several decades of decline during this time period it still managed to stay relatively intact until about 2006 when it completely disappeared from history due to economic difficulties which have plagued most small towns throughout America over the past few decades.
