A few miles east of Alvin, in the small town of Decatur, stands a statue of one of Texas' most famous sons - Alvin C. Johnson. The statue was dedication in 1923 and is located at the Decatur Pioneer Museum. A number of towns and counties within Texas were named after him including Alvin, TX (1924), Alvin, OK (1925), and Bath County, TX (1928). Alvin was born on December 12th, 1892 in what is now Decatur, Texas to parents Elijah and Sarah Johnson. He had two siblings - a brother who died at an early age and a sister who married a local farmer. After graduating from high school in 1912 he moved to Marshall County where he worked on his father's farm until 1914 when he began attending Rice University in Houston where he studied law. He arrived in Dallas just as Prohibition was ending but quickly found himself involved with the liquor business which led to his arrest several times during prohibition years. When it became legal for people to purchase alcohol again he entered the business as an owner/operator but soon closed it down because demand for its products exceeded supply. In 1918 Johnson married Anna Plummer who also worked for her husband’s company prior to their marriage. They had two children before divorcing in 1924; they would later remarry but their second marriage ended in divorce too. After finishing his law degreeJohnson started practicing law full time and opening his own office although many believe that this was only temporarily due to financial difficulties caused by prohibition-related debts which developed out of his experience with the liquor industry rather than any inherent skills or abilities as a lawyer。 In 1922 Johnson won election as county judge for Marshall County becoming one of the first black officials serving inside white majority counties across America during that time period although some claim this victory may have been more about gaining popularity among white voters than anything else given that there were no other African Americans working inside white majority counties at that time。 Four years later he ran unsuccessfully for office again but this time successfully winning election as state senator from Marshall County serving until 1928 after which he resumed practicing law full-time outside the political process while continuing to serve on various public bodies including being chairman of the board of trustees at Rice University from 1930-1936.} The following year(1929) saw Johnson win re-election as state senator despite being term limited due primarily to charges brought against him by then Governor Ross Perot alleging vote buying during campaign season.(note: This charge never materialized.) After leaving elected politicsJohnson returned to practicing law full-time once again.} In 1935 President Franklin D Roosevelt appointed him Commissioner Of Health And Social Security Administration giving him direct authority over social welfare programs} When World War II started Johnson served aboard USS Bull Moose commanded by Rear Admiral Harry S Truman throughout World War II taking part both Operation Neptune's Spearhead off Okinawa Japan andOperation Drumbeat headed up amphibious landings off Samar Island Philippines along with other members of Truman's cabinet such as Secretary Tom Price} After liberation Johnson returned home where he continued living until his death on November 2nd, 1965 at age 87years2months}.
