The town was founded in 1875 by local farmers, who named it after their home county, Alvin, Alabama. The first settlers to live in what is now Alvin arrived during the late 19th century following an organized migration from Alabama led by General Sam Houston. This initial discovery marked a turning point for local Texans as it helped lead to new economic opportunities thanks to increased demand for natural gas products generated by World War I which had become available after Austria-Hungary collapsed following its war with Serbia Despite being little more than dusthills at best at this time - development continued nonetheless with efforts being made both inside and outside Texas government circles towards developing both energy resources AND putting together a strategy for marketing/pumping this new resource - culminating finally with legislation being passed authorizing drillings off shore OF Austin back in 1923!
