The history of the Amarillo Army National Guard began in 1907. The 1st Cavalry Regiment was organized on November 14, 1907 at Fort Worth and its first commanding officer, Major General W.H. Caldwell, was appointed on December 15th. At that time the regiment consisted of three companies: Company A (later Company B), Companies C and D (the original 3rd Battalion) and a Reserve company. In 1912 an order from then-President Taft called for all cavalry units in the United States to be mobilized for service in World War I. The 1st Cavalry Regiment responded immediately by being reorganized as a battalion under command of Captain John W. "Frazer" Howlett Jr.. In 1915, with the entry into World War I, the regiment became an infantry unit and absorbed the 1st Battalion of Company D from the Texas National Guardsmen. On September 8th 1917 Colonel James Henson ordered all cavalry units within Texas to report to Camp Bowie TX for training as part of UFCW's 2nd Brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Sutherlin III aka "The Eager Eagle". After two months Training at Camp Bowie TX, on October 9th 1917 Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron were transferred to Quanah Park TX where they remained until relieved by 5th Brigade Combat Team which arrived at camp on December 20th 1917. During World War II there were no changes to Amarillo's military history other than personnel assignments; however because it was a rural town only 4% of army recruits came through Amarillo while 98% came through Dallas/Fort Worth or Wichita Falls/Arlington County because those cities had larger populations centers that could provide enlisted manpower for military duty
