In 1951, the Marine Barracks was built in Amarillo and it is still used today as a Marine barracks. Amarillo is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 3,391 at the 2010 census. Amarillo is the county seat of Butte County. It is located on the Texan border with Chihuahua and has a sister city relationship with Ciudad Juárez, Mexico City. The first human settlers in what is now Amarillo were Native Americans who lived near the confluence of the Brazos and Arkansas rivers. In 1821, José María Escobar established a rancho (village) called La Boca de las Flores (Flowers' Hole), which became Amarillo after he purchased it from Juan Luna in 1825. La Boca de las Flores was destroyed by fire in 1827; Escobar rebuilt it and named it La Vaca Blanca (White Buffalohole). In 1836, Jason Noyes founded Noyesville as an outpost on an isolated high mesa overlooking the Arkansas River for wagon traffic between Santa Fe and Fort Worth. By 1840, about 150 people had settled there including 10 Mexican citizens who had been brought over as workers on local cotton plantations. On July 4, 1840, Noyesville was abandoned when its inhabitants deserted to join up with Confederate forces retreating from Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. In 1846-1847 Antonio López attempted to establish a town at Anasazi Hill but failed due to lack of water supplies and land available for farming beyond his rancho holdings west of town limits. A group of Mexicans led by José Joaquín Cuevas founded Villa Rica de los Angeles (Rancho Angeles) on November 12, 1848 following their escape from San Antonio de Padua where they had been held as slaves since early 17th century AD.
