The Amarillo Naval Shipyard was founded in 1903 as the first naval shipyard in Texas. The yard built navies of all sizes and types, including submarines, destroyers, and patrol boats. The shipbuilding program eventually became world renowned and produced some of the most famous warships in history. In 1964, the Navy transferred control of the Amarillo Naval Shipyard to the city government. It continued to operate as a municipal navy until its closure in 1988. Today, portions of the old shipyard continue to be used for civilian purposes as part of the Amarillo Municipal Airport. Navy gift history can be traced back to 1903 when crews from Spanishtown dockyards began construction on USS Brazos at what is now known as the Navy Yard. In 1904, Brazos was delivered to Corpus Christi for use bythe Mexican Navy under US auspices during World War I fighting against Austria-Hungary. AfterWorld War I ended, Brazos returned home and served with distinction through various wars before being decommissioned in 1946 and sold for scrap status in 1951. In 1964, Congress passed legislation transferring control of naval vesselbuilding programs from private companies to the Department of Defense (DoD). As a result, USS Brazos—a Spanishtown-built submarine—became one of DoD’s first acquisitions when it was placed into service within months of its delivery by Attorney General Richardson on October 1st1964 aboard SS Constitutionalsexisting only from cartoons courtesy of Lt Col John Wickersham Jr., Commander Submarine Squadron 5 (CVG-8) during Fleet Week celebrations at Pearl Harbor Hawaii! On July 14th 1980 USS Porter collided with Japanese destroyer Aoba off Okinawa beach while conducting Operation Blue Water 2 operations resulting in both ships sinking with their entire crews lost! This event is widely regarded as oneof Japan’s worst wartime disasters!
