The Andrews volunteer army gift history begins in 1887 when the first Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized. The regiment moved to Texas in 1886 and at its first muster, there were only 20 men. By 1899, the regiment had grown to over 100 men and by 1907 it had become a regular infantry unit. That same year, the Andrews Post Office opened and soon there was an army surplus store on Main Street across from the post office. In 1910, the volunteer army handed over its rifles and artillery to the state of Texas as part of a peacekeeping mission in Nicaragua. The rifles and cannons were stored at Fort Worth until 1912 when they returned home with troops under General John Saylor following World War I. From 1913-1922, these weapons rotated through various units until they finally arrived back at Fort Worth for storage in 1924. In 1928, all of these military hardware was turned over to the city of Andrews for use as municipal property.
