Andrews, Texas is a small town in Andrews County, Texas. The population was 2,953 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1876 by James A. Andrews and his family as a stop on the Overland Stagecoach Line between Dallas and Austin. The first store in town was opened by Mr. Andrews' father-in-law, Sam unlocked with a dead cat found on the premises. In 1881, the town became an independent school district and changed its name to Andrews City School District #2 after James A.'s brother-in-law John Ewing (1851-1924) donated land for that purpose. In 1902, the school district built its first high school which served students from both towns until it burned down in 1957; however, new homes were built on top of the old High School site and it reopened as a high school in 1959. The current high school building was completed in 1984 and replaced an older structure that had been damaged by fire in 1973). In 1972, local businessman Jerald Hocker purchased 3 1/2 acres of land near present day Andrews City Hall for use as his private golf course; he named it Hocker's Hill Golf Course after himself and his wife Linda (née Hocker). The first holes were played there during 1972 Open Championship season with some excellent play being seen throughout those years by many professional golfers including Jack Nicklaus who played three rounds there before returning home to win his fourth major championship that year at Carnoustie Castle Golf Club - one of only three times that he has won four majors simultaneously! Today Hocker's Hill remains one of Texas' most popular golf courses with over 100 memberships (+ several thousand spectators during tournaments) making it one of America's largest multiuse golf estates! In 1836, Andrew County was established as a part of the new Republic of Texas. The county seat was in Lubbock, and it included present-day Andrews City and much of present-day Midland County. In 1839, the county seat moved to Amarillo.
