Andrews was founded in 1853 by Andrew Johnson, a U.S. Representative from Tennessee. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Red River, which made it a natural food and trade center. The town reached its peak during the 1880s when it had over 1,000 residents and was home to a cotton gin, gristmill, lumberyard, sawmill, and two newspapers. In the late 1800s, Andrews experienced another boom due to the railroad Mania that swept America. As railroads arrived in Andrews and other towns along the Red River area, production of goods increased and people began moving into the towns for work. By 1910, Andrews had shrunk to less than 100 residents due to declining agricultural production and lack of jobs in nearby cities. However, through cooperation with neighboring communities such as Aliceville and Garrisonville (now Aliceville), Andrews regained some of its former prominence as a manufacturing town during World War II when Arlington County was created from portions of Dallas County. After the war ended in 1945, Andrews slowly declined until it re-emerged as an agricultural community during the 1990s thanks to new farming techniques such as irrigation systems and better weather patterns.
