Angleton, Texas is a town in Hardin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. The town has a post office with ZIP code 72017. It is part of the Wichita Falls–New Braunfels, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Angleton was founded in 1879 by John Denton and his family as an agricultural community on the east side of the Brazos River. In 1886, Angleton became a full-fledged city and received its charter from the state of Texas. In 1913, Angleton annexed neighboring Poteau after that community voted to secede from Hardin County over taxes levied by both towns. In 1941, when World War II began and Hardin County went into Martial Law due to fears of Japanese aggression, Angleton's mayor decided to stay put rather than evacuate with his entire city council because he believed that if he left there would be little chance for resistance should hostilities break out; this decision helped preserve hardline Republican party control over local government during wartime times. After the war ended in 1945 and Hardin County reverted back to normalcy, Mayor Denton returned to office but resigned in 1949 due to health reasons; he was succeeded by his son-in-law Harry Ayer who served until 1957 when he also resigned due to health concerns about treatment given him during official visits abroad with then President Franklin D Roosevelt; first lady Eleanor Roosevelt then appointed her husband's former aide Lucius Watkins as mayor instead pending an election in which Ayer could not run because he had stage four cancer at the time (Watkins would later become governor of Texas). On November 5th 1957ANGLETON TEXAS CITY COUNCIL VOTED TO APPEAL IN COURT AGAINST LUCIUS WATKINS AS MAYOR

Today, there are over 200 distinct squadrons within the USAF; all fighting across a variety of theatres worldwide. These planes and crews provide vital support to our warfighters on many fronts; from Afghanistan to Iraq and beyond! The name of the town comes from Confederate Union General John A. Angleton, who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The Angleton Post Office was established in 1879 and discontinued operation in 1957. The first settler to arrive in what is now Angleton was James Hancey on August 17, 1879. He named his land "Angleton" after General John A. Angleton who had been an important figure in the Confederate army during the American Civil War - he had also fought against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant's command at Bull Run (1861). Hancey's nephews continued to live there until they sold their land to Rice & Milburn back in 1907 which served as the basis for later development around what is now known as downtown Angleton/Auraria Heights/Eagle Pointe Park area with its famous Big Cypress Creek Golf Course and many other attractions today including: Baptist Care Home & Rehabilitation Center; Balmoral Ballroom; Batchelors' Arms Pub & Grill; Brennan-Lees Funeral Home; City Hall Annex Building; First Methodist Church - Gothic Revival style (1881); Fourth Street Baptist Church - Second Empire Style (1901); Gadsden Arsenal Ammunition Plant Historic District (1975), Angleton is located at . According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, it has a humid subtropical climate or "Cfa". As of 1990, 80% of all residents were white Protestant Christians while 20% were black African Americans and 10% Hispanic or Latino residents according to Census data. As of 2000 income estimates ranged from $30K-$60K with 30% experiencing poverty level or below making it one of highest prices per capita in Midland County when adjusted for cost of living indexes etcetera
The town of Angleton, Texas was founded in 1871 by the father of the current mayor, Arthur A. Angleton. The first store in the town was built on a log cabin and it is believed that the first post office was also located here. In 1893, Angleton became an independent school district and in 1907, it consolidated with neighboring towns to form the present-day City of Angleton.
