In 1881, James Hogg founded what would become Angleton Chemical Company in what is now downtown Angleton. The company manufactured various products including oil lamps, candles and soapuds until it merged with American Tobacco in 1984. Angleton also played an important role during World War II as a munitions production center due to its proximity to Junkyard Arsenal and Shrapnel Factory No. 2 which produced shells used in the war. After the war, Angleton reverted back to its farming roots and experienced some slow growth until recent decades when new development has gradually begun to take hold within the town limits: two large shopping malls have been built within walking distance of downtown while several high-end restaurants have opened up around town since 2000 that have helped drive population growth once again.
