In 1915, Mayor John Witherspoon designated Fifth Street between Elm and Walnut as “Police Boulevard” to commemorate this important accomplishment. This designation helped to promote law enforcement values within Arlington society. In 1951, when Arlington became a state-sanctioned city under Governor Ross Barnett, it again elected its own mayor. At this time, City Council decided to change their name from “Arlington Heights” to “Arlington” because it felt more associated with commerce and progress than terror or crime. The first appointing officer for the newly formed Police Department was Judge Hoyle Jaffee who served from 1951-1957; he later became County Attorney before his death in 1984. From 1957-1968, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Satterwhite took over command of the department while concurrently serving on City Council where he chaired several committees related to police policymaking including Civil Rights allegedly one such committee considered how best to deal with African Americans who were becoming increasingly assertive within their community despite previous assurances by City Manager Pugh that these individuals would be tolerated without fear or favoritism due solely to race considerations only one such incident occurred during Lt Col Satterwhite's tenure another being an altercation between two black students regarding parking space near Trinity Lutheran School North on Decatur Blvd near IH 10

Many buildings were completed during this time including City Hall (1948), Civic Center (1958), Bank of America Tower (2001),the current Marriott Hotel (2006) and countless other structures that still stand today including Stonington Elementary School (1893). In 1990, when Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area was created, Arlington became one of its component cities. It has since experienced significant development with a growing core business district surrounding Confederate Memorial Park across I-635 from downtown DFW.. This redevelopment has resulted in numerous high profile businesses such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Apple Inc., Amazon Web Services LLC., Raytheon Co., Verizon Wireless Fios TV service area Headquarters - North Building (2007) and more recently Sears Holdings Corporation’s Camden Yards Subdivision which opened in 2013 adjacent to Toyota Stadium
