Airforce Gift History in Austin, Texas began with the formation of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC) at Lackland AFB in 1941. From there, airmen and women from all over Texas joined the AFROTC program. In 1951, Air University was founded as a branch of the Air Force Academy. With its new location on San Antonio’s Southside, AFROTC became an important part of War College preparatory course for future USAF officers. By 1969, AFROTC had branches at Travis AFB and Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFB in Washington State; Goodfellow AFB near Wichita Falls,Texas; Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina; Offutt AFB in Omaha Nebraska; Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson Arizona; and Pope Field near Miami Florida. In 1992, the USAF activated its first Flying training squadron called The Thunderbirds which flew C-5 Galaxy Aircraft from Dyess AFB in Clarksville Tennessee to Joint Base Lewis-McChord Airport southeast of Seattle WA for basic flying instruction to enlisted members of the military and civilians livingnearby. These days airmen from all over Texas come together annually for Wing And Staff Conference (WAC) weekend exercises at Lackland AFB each August where they learn more about their unit's history while meeting fellow service members from other wings or services who are also attending this highly beneficial event that provides much needed skills development within our military!
