In the early 1800s, Austin was a small town in what is now the City of Austin. In 1837, General Sam Houston founded the Republic of Texas and named his new state Austin in honor of his friend and mentor, President James K. Polk. The city grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes, as well as its proximity to slavery and gold rushes. By 1840, Austin had a population of over 10,000 people. The first coffee house in Austin opened in 1841 on Congress Avenue near Waller Street. The first commercial espresso machine was built by Antonio Canova in 1846 at Seventh and Lamar Streets. In 1850–51, John Tuggle opened the first newspaper printed on paper plates in Austin proper – The Texas Observer. Austin's oil boom during the late 1800s led to an influx of immigrants: Italians (mostly from Piedmont Italy), Germans (mainly from Silesia), Poles (mostly from Lower Silesia), Russians ( chiefly Caucus Ioffe) and Japanese were among those who moved to the city during this time period. Many became entrepreneurs or joined professional military units fighting against American forces during the Mexican-American War or World War II. Austin, Texas is a city in the southern part of the U.S. state of Texas and the capital of Austin County. The population was 592,827 as of 2016,[1] making it the most populous county in Texas and one of its most populous cities. Austin is also home to the University of Texas at Austin, one of Americas top universities. The citys history goes back to 1836 when General Sam Houston founded an adobe rancho on what is now parts of downtown Austin. In 1847, two years after Houston's death, his sonisted heir Colonel John B. Travis purchased land east of downtown from Sam Houston's heirs and began to build what would become Travis Park (now known as Baylor University Park). In 1855, right before Mexican War veteran Antonio Lopez arrived in Austin with his family for purposes of grazing cattle on new land that he had bought northward from Phineas Gage, mayor White organized a citizens' convention to petition for annexation by Austin into the growing metropolis that was becoming San Antonio de Texarkana. By 1870, when annexation became official, over 50% of Austin's population lived in areas annexed during this time including Travis Park where today’s UT Campus stands[2]. In 1915–16 Mayor Moody erected what is now City Hall—the first building on campus now used by UT Regent School District—on Cannon Street near Third Street in anticipation that a permanent municipal seat could be built there since no other site within city limits had been selected for incorporation.[3] A year later Moody designated University Hill as the site for Municipal Hall which still stands today (along with City Hall) on Congress Avenue between First and Second Streets cornering Trinity Lane[4]. At this point local newspapers were beginning to refer to “town” or even just “Austin” rather than simply “Houston” or even just “Texas” because all municipalities west of San Antonio were being integrated into Greater Houston (i.e., less developed).[5] On December 14th 1916 Mayor Moody dedicated Municipal Hall at 22nd & Lamar Place after having heard reports that people living east side along 21st Street were suffering unnecessarily due to congestion caused by automobiles traveling down Lamar Street which led directly upholstered sidewalks onto their property while they went about their daily lives;[6] thus started an era where pedestrians enjoyed unrestricted access sidewalks throughout Downtown while motorists had exclusive use OF THE ROAD until well into the late 1970s when streetcars finally began running down High St between 2nd/ 3rd streets through much older streetcar yards ending at Main+Congress Avenues BART Station
