Azle is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,816 at the 2010 census. The name Azle comes from the Apache language and means "hill of the eagle". The city is located on the banks of the Brazos River. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. According to http://www.azletexasgov.com/city-information/azle, azle's history dates back to 1872 when Mexican immigrants founded a small town after they were driven out of their home by Native Americans in what is now Midland County. They named it Paso del Rio de la Plata, or "river crossing." The first post office opened in 1879 and was called San Antonio de Azle because that's where most of the Mexicans living in Azle then lived. In 1886, some Anglo settlers arrived who renamed their new community Amarillo and changed the spelling to Azle for safety reasons – something that stuck until 1907 when officials decided to change it back to Amarillo again because people were still using 'a' as an ending letter throughout Texas (the state had no such rule). By 1915 there were so many similar towns being established all over Texas that one official decided to create a county within Midland County just for these settlements – this would later become McLennan County.
