The United States Air Force has a tradition of sending gifts to its constituent countries during Armed Forces Day. This year, the Balch Springs-based 493rd Fighter Wing sent a gift to the Mexican military on December 12th. The gift was a brand new F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet air ambulance. This aircraft is unique in that it is the first operational model of this type in the Mexican Air Force. The 493rd Fighter Wing also donated five S-2C Songbird helicopter kits for use by members of the Mexican Navy as part of their training program. These helicopters will be used to transport troops and supplies into and out of coastal areas in Mexico during exercises called "Operation Neptune Spear." In addition, members of the 493rd Fighter Wing presented two sets of markings for an upcoming ceremony commemorating 50 years since Balch Springs joined the United States Air Force as a satellite community located near Brownsville, Texas (now El Paso). This event will celebrate Republic Day, which is celebrated annually on December 5th in Mexico.
