In 1861, Battle Creek resident Major General Braxton Bragg decided to move his army from Galveston Bayou towards Huntsville so he could attackHouston City from the rear. He ordered Majors Waddell and Taylor to build an artillery battery on FM 2270 east of town for protection against possible interference by Houston City Mayor John Auld (later Ulysses S Grant). The battery was called “The Big Ears” because it had 8 cannons that could fire up to 200 rounds per minute! FM 2270 served as a main supply route between Camp Bowie and Houston during World War II when it became known as “The Hwy 45 Corridor” due to its importance for troop movement across Texan countryside during that time period.
