The first municipal building, the County Courthouse Annex, was built on this square in 1913. In 1924, Bay City became a city and its first mayor was Marshall L. Hinton. From 1941-1945 Bay City experienced World War II when it was occupied by Nazi Germany as part of the Allied Forces Occupation of Europe. After the war ended, Bay City returned to its prewar form with a population of about 3500 people. Throughout this time various businesses were founded or renovated including: United Cigar Dealers Inc., American Legion Post 954 (now Veterans Memorial Park), First National Bank (now BB&T Bank), The Jacksons Drug Store and Grill (now Jakes BBQ) and The Mrs.'s Bakery & Cafe (now Just Bites). In 1970 Bay City passed through several mayors including Earl Kempthorne who served from 1971-1975; Donald Cramer from 1976-1978; Harry Ellison from 1979-1981; Cecil Harmon from 1982-1984; and Donny Wilkins from 1985-1988. During this time various new developments such as Stauffer's Pharmacy were established while other businesses like The Shipyards closed their doors for good. Bay City is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles east of Corpus Christi and 20 miles west of Galveston.
