Bay City is a city in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Travis County. The first known permanent settler in Bay City was James Ivey. He arrived on May 3, 1827 and named it "Ivey's Landing". A post office called "Bay City" was established in 1829, and remained in operation until 1965. After being founded by James Ivey and other pioneers, Bay City grew rapidly due to its location on the Red River as well as easy access to water supplies and hunting opportunities. By 1881, Bay City had become one of the largest cotton ports on the Great Lakes region. Cotton plantations were developed around this time and helped contribute to Bay City's economic growth. In 1904, Bay City became part of the United States after Mexico ceded its southern border to America through Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1916, General John J Pershing donated land for a military airfield in what is now downtown Bay City. The airport served as an important hub for American aviation during World War II including landing operations for pilots training at Fort Worth Municipal Airport nearby which played host to more than 100% of all U2 flights over that war period! Today parts of downtown are still home to buildings from that era while others have been replaced with modern architecture reflecting today's global economy

The town became an important stop on the Houston – Galveston Railroad and experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century. Bay City experienced its heyday during World War II when it served as a munitions plant for the war effort. It has since declined in popularity, but retains some historical significance.
