Bay City, Texas is a small town in Harrison County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Bay City was founded in 1887 by John Bayly and his wife Sarah Clements. The original name for the town was "Bellefontaine". The first post office in Bay City was established in 1893. In 1907, Bay City became a city and took its present name of Bay City, Texas on July 6th of that year. The Bakersfield-based Fruit Belt Railway (FBR) built a line from BayCity to El Paso in 1915. On April 15, 1922 the FBR discontinued operations at BayCity due to economic decline and lack of patronage; however, it continued service to El Paso until 1951. In 1957 the Interstate 30 Bridge over Buffalo Creek was opened as part of the national I-30 network; this provided access to new businesses and residences within bay city proper as well as access to other parts of Harrison County through Buffalo Creek Bridge Road which continues today as Loop 288 highway (Harrison County Highway 5). In 1966 the Houston Texans were founded as an expansion team for American Football League (AFL) teams located inHouston; they played their first game against San Diego Chargers on November 8th that year at Astrodome Stadium in Houston with a capacity crowd of 66,204 people including 43 season ticket holders from bay city itself who watched from various seats along one side only.
