Baytown, Texas is a small town located in Harris County, Texas. The population was 7,362 at the 2000 census. Baytown is part of the Houston metropolitan area. The city is named after Baytown, Texas and its founder Dr. James Fenton. The first settlers in what is now Baytown were white men who arrived in 1836 from Louisiana. They founded a rancho on the present-day site of Lone Star Ford Shopping Center and named it for their powerful friend and neighbor, General Sam Houston. In 1849, Captain John Troup from Kentucky bought a grant from the Mexican government near modern-day Slaughterhouse Bend for $5 per acre (1/8th mile). He made hay and cattle on his farm until 1850 when he sold it to James Fenton for $10 per acre (3/8ths mile). Fenton was an early settler in what became Baytown. He built a adobe home on what is now First Street in 1852 and named it after his home state of Alabama (now Georgia). He also founded San Jacinto College which opened its doors to students on November 15, 1857 as the first college west of Wichita Falls. In 1865, Colonel J A Giddings purchased 2,000 acres of land east of baytown from Mexico for $2 million dollars ($102 million today) including all water rights necessary to build an irrigation system that would allow farming throughout much of central Texas beyond what had been possible before with only surface water access. This purchase created the Giddings Prairie State Park today’s baytown area that includes over 26 miles (39 km) of hiking trails connectingObservatory Hill with downtown baytown . On March 13th 1865 Captain John Troup sold 1/4interest in Giddings Prairie State Park to James Fenton for $5 per acre ($41/$6 = $100), making this one ofbaytown’s earliest land transactions ever recorded

Baytown, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Baytown County. The population was 111,041 at the 2010 census, making it the fifth-most populous municipality in Texas and one of its most populous cities. It is also the second-largest city in Houston metropolitan area afterHouston. The city was founded by Moses Austin on April 3, 1836 as an addition to Galveston County and named for John Baptist Baytown, who had come from Kentucky to become a land speculator and captain of a vessel called the Missouri. In 1839, Austin negotiated a land sale with Sam Houston that created Baytown County. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1847, Baytown was incorporated as a town under the name Austinville; it reverted to its original name on July 1, 1861 when it became part of Houston through annexation by that city. In 1911–12 Mayor Lewis Hogg ordered all public works within 10 miles (16 km) of his home stopped because he believed they were being funded without properbidirectional funding priorities set out by City Manager Harry Wylie which would have placed jobs instead near railroads and other important industrial sites essential for heavy industry growth while not targeting smaller businesses or neighbourhoods that could not support such investments; this order later became known as "Hogg's Rule". The ban ultimately led to economic stagnation throughout much of Baytown until Mayor Mike Rawlings reimposed heavy spending mandates upon City Hall beginning in 1976 which stabilized baytown's economy
