The Beaumont, Texas Army National Guard was activated on December 15, 1917. The unit was organized as the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment and was initially equipped with artillery pieces. On February 10, 1918 the battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment and its artillery piece became an M1A1 tank. The battalion served in World War I and World War II before being disbanded on October 16, 1945.
Beaumont, Texas is a town located in Webb County, Texas. The population was 9,611 as of the 2010 census. The name is derived from General James Beauregard's victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto on November 6, 1836. The present-day town was founded in 1873 by Captain John Hogg and his wife Eliza Hogg. It grew rapidly due to fuel production during the early years of the oil industry in North Texas. Today, Beaumont ranks fourth statewide among U.S. cities with a population over 10,000 in terms of job growth and industrial employment since 2000 according to the Dallas/Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce's "20 Under 20" report released in October 2018. Beaumont, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is part of the Austin-San Antonio metropolitan area. The city was founded by Augustus Beaumont in 1839. It grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as a result of its location on the Texas Gulf Coast, trade with Mexico, cattle ranching, and timber industry. In 1871, Beaumont became an independent city and it has since become one of the most important centers of commerce and culture in the region. The city was named for Augustus Beaumont because he purchased land here in 1839 from Col. John Fainwright for $5 per acre. The town quickly grew due to its strategic location on the Gulf Coast between Corpus Christi and Galveston Bay—a position that made it difficult for other towns to compete. The town's growth continued until around 1860 when it was hit hard by a flood that destroyed most of Houston's infrastructure. However, Beaumont recovered quickly and began to grow even faster than Houston did; by 1865, Beaumont had reached a population size exceeding 2,000 people. During World War II, Beaumont played a significant role in the war effort as a munitions plant and shipyard producing aircraft parts for America's allies such as Britain and Japan. After World War II ended, many factories closed down throughout Southwestern United States due to technological advancements which caused mass layoffs across entire industries including manufacturing jobs in particular which took place throughout much of West Texas especially around Wichita Falls (the site now known as Denton). However over time some companies like Lockheed Martin have been able to keep pace with advances in technology while others have not been able to maintain their workforce levels despite attempts at relocating them outside of Southwestern United States into new facilities elsewhere within North America or Europe (See also: "Southwest US Manufacturing Decline after 1970s") In recent years many small businesses have emerged within DowntownBeaumont which continue to thrive despite tough economic times thanks largely to supportive government policies like Tax Increment Financing which Encourages Small Businesses Development programmes (TIFDB).
