The first residents of what would become Beaumont were Native Americans who hunted game on and around present day Beaumont Lake. In 1828, General Sam Houston built his military fortification named Fort Bend County seat after Lord Beaumont, 1st Viscount Mulgrave. The town was platted in 1836 by John Sutter as a sawmill town that would be adjacent to Fort Bend County for rifle or artillery production from nearby Palo Duro Canyon." In 1881, Judge James Hogg completed construction of Baylor University's Main Campus in downtown Beaumont which became one of the largest universities north of Mexico City. Today Baylor University is one of top 100 public universities in America with over 120 undergraduate programs and 10 graduate programs." ranchers started coming to this area to graze their animals near present day Hearn Road and La Salle Street between 1886 and 1888 when cattle prices were high due to lack of feedstock closer to cities such as Galveston or Houston."
