Bedford is a town in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,865 at the 2010 census. Bedford is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Town of Bedford was founded in 1876 by members of the Methodist Church and named for Leland Bedford who had donated land to the town. The first post office opened in 1898. The townsite was laid out on March 8, 1881 by Wm. H. Brown and others with help from J. Prentice Morton and Elisha Cooke Sr.. A hotel/motel/grange was built on South Beaumont Street in 1903-1905 by Tilton Hotel Co., Ltd., which went bankrupt after a few years and operated as a gas station until 1984 when it became an arts center known as "The Starlite". In 1911, plows were brought into Bedford from Cottonwood Township to clear snow off streets; this event is recalled at Maple Grove Baptist Church located near Main Street where local residents served refreshments during an ice cream social that year celebrating the arrival of new equipment which made plowing possible! The Bergdams were among the earliest settlers in Bedford. They came from Germany and had a farm near Augusta, Georgia. In 1881,Captain Edwin Bedford donated land to the town of Bedford for a public school district. After many years of discussion and planning, the first school building was built on Elm Street in 1903. In 1949,the City Council voted to annex adjacent rural farmland which would form the nucleus of what is now downtown Bedford; this annexation created significant challenges for future development because it limited access to affordable property for developers within the annexed area until after 2039 when all zoning restrictions were eliminated pursuant to a Citywide Land Use Plan amendment passed by voters in November 2009 In October 2014 Mayor Wimberley announced that redevelopment plans are underway for much of Downtown including: an 8-acre expansion on Elm Street known as "The Foundry" which will include high-end retail space with office and hotel uses; an addition to southbound I-10 just east of Elm Street that will house restaurantspaces; an apartment complex off US Highway 59 known as "Red Rock Commons"; a large parkade on South First Street across from Town Hall; a large mixed use project located near Interstate 10 called "Central Park". This redevelopment is expected create over 100 jobs over 5 years while increasing pedestrian connectivity throughout downtown including connections between various museums and other forms of cultural activity
