Bedford, Texas is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 979 at the 2010 census, down from 1,063 at the 2000 census. It is located in Hudspeth County and is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Bedford was founded by Amish people in 1827 as a small farming community on an oxcart ride from nearby San Antonio. In 1847, Bedford became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail when it was extended to Central Texas from New Mexico. The town grew rapidly after railroads arrived in 1870, and by 1900 it had a population of 2,500. In 1965, Bedford accepted annexation by Austin; since then it has been its own municipality with its own government and school district. The economy relies largely on agriculture, though there are also some manufacturing jobs in Bedford's core region around Highway 183 and Interstate 35W
Bedford was founded in 1853 by James Bedford and his wife, Peggy. The town grew quickly and soon had a school, store, and even a post office. In 1861, the Union army came to Bedford and burned all of the town down. However, the Battle of Gettysburg saved Bedford and the town prospered for years afterwards.
