Bedford is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. Bedford is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Bedford was James Robertson who arrived in 1851. The present day Bedford land was granted to John Hogg in 1872. A post office called Bedford was established in 1881 and continued operation until it closed in 1907. In 1886, the U.S. government established the Round Rock Rancho de la Bahía Mexican Land grant to wealthy Anglo rancher George Wickersham Parkes and his brother-in-law Samuel French Conte (1824-1910). The Parkes brothers had purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of what would become Bedford from José Antonio Zaragoza y Pérez on November 8, 1886 for $5 per acre ($ / ha). The grant allowed for Indian land purchases as well as cattle and horse grazing rights on . In 1906, when a new community named Round Rock sprang up around what is now Speedway Boulevard south of I-35W, Parkes donated an additional 1 million acres (500 km2) of ranchland including much of what became Bedford to round out theRoundRockRanchos community development area adjacent to Highway 95 north of downtown Austin The early history of Bedford can be traced back to when James Robertson settled there with his family late 1830s after traveling through Central Texas five times looking for a place to settle permanently: "Robertson located himself at this location about four miles below [the current town] on Round Rock Creek." He built a cabin soon after arrival and started raising crops and haying sheep that he sold off along with some cattle in local markets across Central Texas before coming back eastward into Johnson County sometime during 1840s or 1850s where he died December 3rd aged 78 years old having been pioneer "one of our most enterprising men ever seen". By 1862 all but one inhabitant had left - leaving behind only two white families living among Native Americans then living within Johnson County limits." In 1865 another group moved there from Midlothian following the Civil War - this time starting a sawmill which generated income enough to send their families back eastward into Kansas City by way of Galveston Bayou but also attracted attention from US forces stationed near Fort Worth so they were able't just leave again." Soon afterwards other businesses began popping up hereabouts such as grocery stores and blacksmith shops followed by cotton ginners later making cotton relative easy grown hereabouts due mostly to good soil conditions plus climate change brought about by humans' activities" This early history has left its mark even today with roads named after pioneers like James Robertson Memorial Road running through towns such as Bedford while creek names still remain like Roundrock Creek flowing through today's town center including roundabout now called Speedway Boulevard
