In 1853 the town's post office was established and operated from a building on Smallwood Avenue. Mail was delivered to the settlement by wagon rack and horseback from Huntsville on the Grapevine Railroad. In 1881 Beeville incorporated as a city and became an important commercial center for Hudspeth County with its own newspaper, court house and jail. The city flourished until World War II when many businesses closed due to wartime rationing of essential materials such as food and gasoline. After the war Beeville experienced rapid growth with numerous new developments including a high school, shopping mall, hospitals and major league baseball players (including Nolan Ryan). Beeville is a town in Waller County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texas City, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Beeville was John Beeville who arrived in 1836 from Illinois. He named his land after General James Beeville who fought against Mexican forces near Veracruz during the Texas Revolution. In 1851, Edward Haughton donated land to the town for school purposes and also for farming purposes. A post office was established in 1852 and remained in operation until it closed on February 13, 1957. In 1863, Confederate general Robert Ewell made an attempt to cross the Red River into Texas by means of Beeville and its crossing point on the railway known as "Hillsborough". After being repulsed by Union forces at Milliken's Bend adjacent to present-day Waco, Ewell retreated westward across Red River Valley towards Corinth where he unsuccessfully besieged that city before withdrawing back overland to Fort Worth on December 17. Believed to be lost forever according to some researchers since no evidence has been found leading back upriver more than a mile or so from where Highway 183 now intersects Red River Road (the original road), Beeville nonetheless remains one of Waller County's most famous landmarks today because of its location within easy driving distance of Amarillo and all of central Texas without any out-of-state visitors necessary; indeed much of what makes this place such an interesting tourist destination today can be credited directly to General James Bowie's establishment hereabouts as well as those who came later - many were veterans or families returning home from Reconstruction efforts in South Carolina and other southern states which followedCivil War outcomes etc... Most notably these days are two old shopping malls anchored by two large anchor department stores - JB Hiatt & Company started operations here circa 1975 when JB Hiatt bought Loews Plaza downtown - still going strong with new tenants like Sears Holdings Mall nearby (closed 2010) while Main Street shows few signs of slowing down even though over time various businesses have moved out (recovering costs/hiring new employees etc)... Many smaller businesses have also moved out (or been acquired by larger companies) making it difficult nowadays if not impossible actuallyTo identify individual buildings older than 50 years! It should go without saying that once upon a time there were very few paved streets outside anything close thereto due largely to Indian raids which often took place during early morning hours when travel would generally be halted pending further notice thereby minimizing potential discovery... This forced people very much reliant upon horseback riding or walking becoming their primary methods for getting about town... Today however things are different thanks both more recent development including many chain restaurants along US 183 as well as Walmart located just off FM 925 opposite Throckmorton High School built circa 1990 now home only to Tim Hortons coffee shop etc... ample parking available behind Walmart too! As mentioned earlier there has been relatively little change whatsoever (+/- 2 miles north) within what used (& still does) constitute DowntownBeevilles limits sinceBeginnings including erection+construction+maintenance+replacement+updates etc... There have only ever been a handful scattered reports (=1% total number*) indicating that property lines have changed +/- 500 feet lone exception*.... everything else inside boundaries has stayed essentially same since '53...? What does this tell us about local sentiment? *Of course everyone’s story could always be totally different so no guarantees given
Beeville was founded in 1836 by James Beeville, a Civil War veteran and cattle rancher. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to the discovery of oil in nearby Tarrant County. In 1871, Beeville became an independent city, and its first mayor was John B. Sibley. In 1886, Beeville joined the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area; at this time, it was one of the most rural areas in Texas. The population of Beeville peaked at around 60,000 in 1950 but has declined since then due to migration to larger cities. Today, there are about 10,000 residents living in Beeville proper and its annexes such as White Settlement and Springtown.
