He exported his crops back to America while Maxim continued farming and manufacturing products such as munitions and cars. By 1902, both men had died leaving their businesses to their children. However, within five years of each other's deaths, their sons Charles (the younger) and Harold (the older) had taken over their fathers businesses respectively. But by 1912 there were ten businesses: four churches (two Methodist and two Baptist), three schools (grades 1-12; both public schools closed during World War II), a doctor's office/clinic (later renamed Memorial Hermann Hospital), an oil refinery for refining kerosene into gasoline and diesel fuel, four recreational vehicles storage sheds(later converted into apartments), and another livery stable serving as a hotel for visitors coming from downtown Dallas orHouston during their stay in central TX . In 1920 when Interstate 10 came through central TX , Benbrook had thirteen businesses including four churches (two Methodist and two Baptist) plus two school buildings(grades 1-12).
