In 1881, Benjamin Fenton built an agricultural cooperative which became one of the largest cotton plantations in Texas. The plantation closed in 1907 but reopened as a hotel in 1916 with new ownership byJimmie Lee Hilliard Jr.. It closed again in 1978 but reopened as a museum in 1984.
