Big Spring is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Big Spring has a post office with ZIP code 78726. The townsite was laid out by pioneers on May 25, 1867, when they moved from Fredericksburg to what is now Big Spring. At that time it was known as "Folsom Station" and "Springdale". The name originated from nearby Folsom Creek which flowed through the town site. In 1872, a post office was established in Big Spring and the name changed to "Big SPRING". In 1907, the name reverted back to "Big SPRING" after an Improvement Association referendum resulted in choosing "Big SPRING" over two other proposals - one for "Springs", another for "Springdale". Today's downtown area was developed during World War II as a military installation called Fort Bliss (later known as Austin-Round Rock) which operated until it closed in 1946. During its tenure some of Big Springs most notable residents included future U.S. President Lyndon B Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson; General John J Pershing; Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz; and Dr Roy Lantz who served as medical director at Austin-Round Rock Air Force Base during World War II and later founded Lantz Pharmaceuticals Incorporated there in 1951. In 1951, Mayor Harry Hargrave implemented racial segregation in all public places within city limits while he served as mayor of Austin- Round Rock – one of only two cities in Texas then subject to such segregation policies (the other being Dallas). This prohibition ended when Hargrave left office in 1959 following years of legal challenges led by African American attorney Tishomingo Thomas who also represented local businesses that were discriminated against under Hargrave's predecessor, Mayor James WOODRUFF Sr.. Today's downtown district is home to several businesses owned or managed by African Americans including Harris Teeter grocery store located across from the old Fort Bliss barracks building whereJohnson Training School once stood before morphing into Baylor University . Big Spring was founded by Texans who came to the area during the American Revolution. The first post office in Big Spring was established on July 4, 1859. The townspeople of Big Spring were very active in local politics and played an important role in developing the community into what it is today. One of their most notable accomplishments was when they helped create the state of Texas and help make it a successful republic. Big Spring has experienced many changes over the years, including becoming an industrial center during World War II, experiencing a rapid growth following Hurricane Ike in 2008, and experiencing a significant decline following several economic downturns. However, despite these fluctuations, Big Spring has always been an important part of Texas history and culture.
Big Spring is a city in Beaumont County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,909 as of the 2010 census. It lies on the Red River near Beaumont. The first white people to live in Big Spring were some French colonists who arrived there in 1835. They named their community after one of their own number, Benjamin Franklin Big Spring. A post office and school were established in 1840, but it was not until 1851 that the town name was changed from "Franklin" to "Big Spring". In 1865, Big Spring became an independent republic and adopted a new government code. In 1881, BigSpring started receiving mail from Galveston so large quantities had to be delivered by wagon train overland using wagons filled with goods brought downriver by riverboatloads. The railroad reached BigSpring in 1886 and made it its terminus; at this time mail service ceased completely. In 1907 the town built its first water tower which still stands today (it is now part of the Texarkana Municipal Park).
