Big Spring is a town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Big Spring-based petroleum company Baker Hughes Inc., headquartered in Houston, lease space in Dell's corporate headquarters complex in Round Rock as well as other businesses and residences. Big Spring was founded by George W. French on March 25, 1875 near present-day Midway Boulevard and State Highway 183. At its peak during the 1920s it had a population of around 10,000 people living in 9 square miles (22 km2). In 1930 the population decreased to 549 people living in 452 acres (1 km2). The small town experienced significant growth starting around 1960 when oil exploration began along Railroad Road north of town. This led to large increases in both housing and business development within town limits; according to the 2010 census, there were over 1,700 residentsliving within a 2 mile radius of Big Spring proper while also encompassing portions of what are now Midway Boulevard and FM 1460. By 1970 Big Spring had reached its current size with a population of 11,561 people living within 4square miles (10 km2). Oil production continued through the early 21st century but ended formally by 2006 with only minor production continuing until 2013. thereafter there has been no major production from Big Spring either
